Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold has sparked widespread discussion following his candid assessment of Nigeria's political landscape, asserting that the country is not operating as a true democratic nation. The "Orente" crooner shared his thoughts during a recent appearance on the One54 Podcast, where he weighed in on the governance standards and democratic processes within the nation.
Addressing the controversy surrounding fellow musician Davido’s previous public appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the Osun State governorship election, Adekunle Gold offered context for the move. He explained that such external calls for oversight stem from a fundamental lack of trust in the nation's internal democratic structures. According to the singer, citizens and public figures often look outward because the domestic system fails to uphold standard democratic principles.
The musician emphasized that Nigeria continues to fall short of the expectations set by functional democracies around the world. "I think Davido sent that message to Donald Trump because we are not truly practising democracy in Nigeria. We are not doing what a democratic society should do," he remarked during the interview.
Looking ahead, Adekunle Gold expressed hope that the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would implement meaningful reforms to strengthen democratic institutions and improve governance, surpassing the performance of previous leaderships. "I just hope this administration does better than the previous one," he added.
