Grammy-nominated Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has explicitly ruled out supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. The singer made his position clear despite his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, declaring his endorsement for President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking in a recent interview with News Central TV shortly after the Osun State governorship election results were announced, the Afrobeat superstar explained that he is under no obligation to align with his uncle’s political preferences. While acknowledging Governor Adeleke’s decision to back President Tinubu, Davido emphasized that every individual has the right to make their own political choices.
Reflecting on his past political involvement, Davido recalled his active participation in previous election cycles, including his campaign efforts for the APC during its initial party merger in 2015—when his late uncle was part of the coalition—as well as his former support for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The singer also highlighted his influence during the Osun State governorship contest, boasting about his strategic role in securing victory for his family despite facing formidable political opposition. He noted that he was able to challenge and overcome powerful political structures through communication and public mobilization.
"I defeated 17 governors with all their power, with all their immunity, escort commanders, DSS, with all their billions. I defeated them with just a phone," Davido said. "For now, I feel like I did what I had to do for the Osun people and my family. You can’t force me to have a presidential candidate. My uncle might have his personal reasons for the gain of the state."
Addressing Governor Adeleke’s swift alignment with the presidency after winning the election, Davido clarified where he stands moving into the next general election cycle.
"My uncle, immediately he won, came out to declare his support for President Tinubu. But as for me, I am not prepared to support anybody," he stated. "I personally haven’t seen anybody in the past. Yes, I have supported Atiku before when we were in PDP, and I even supported in 2015 when APC first did the merger. My late uncle was part of the APC, so I campaigned then. But right now, I don’t have a presidential candidate. It might change, sha. It’s not going to be APC, but everybody should have their own."
